Nestled in the heart of Fort Lauderdale, the Museum of Discovery and Science (MODS) offers a vibrant tapestry of interactive exhibits that celebrate the wonders of science and the natural world. In my latest "Hidden in Plain Sight" project, I had the unique opportunity to merge art with science, camouflaging models into two of the museum's most iconic installations: the Great Gravity Clock and The Citrus Grove Playground.

The Gravity Clock

The first camouflage took place in front of something truly epic: the Great Gravity Clock. If you’ve ever walked by MODS on Broward Boulevard, you’ve seen it. It’s a 52-foot-tall kinetic sculpture — the largest of its kind in Florida. It's constantly moving, constantly ticking, and it’s a brilliant mix of art, science, and time.

I knew I had to try something ambitious.

I painted my model directly into the structure, carefully matching every shade of metal, every curve, every gear. When you see the final result, you’ll notice how the model becomes part of the clock itself — almost like time paused just long enough to disappear into it.

For the second painting, I took things in a totally different direction — full color, full energy, full play.

The Citrus Grove Playground is one of MODS’ most vibrant spots. It’s designed for young explorers, with giant oranges, bright leaves, and bold, fun shapes. It celebrates Florida’s citrus roots, and honestly, it was the perfect challenge to hide someone in plain sight.

Matching those colors and forms wasn’t easy — everything had to flow. But once it all came together, the model was fully part of the scene. You couldn’t tell where the playground ended and the painting began.

Why I Do It

Projects like this remind me why I started Hidden in Plain Sight. It’s not just about blending into the background. It’s about making people pause. Look again. Realize how much they’re missing when they don’t slow down and truly see.

MODS was the perfect place for this. It’s a space that encourages discovery — and in my own way, I tried to add to that magic.

Big thanks to the amazing team at the museum, and of course, to the talented models and crew who made this possible. If you’re ever in Fort Lauderdale, do yourself a favor and spend a day at MODS. You’ll leave inspired.

Until the next destination... stay curious.
